Does the train run on time?

We make every effort to depart and return on time.  However, delays are always possible.

Are there restrooms on the train?

Yes, each passenger car has its own restrooms for both Men and Women and there are restrooms at the Jasper Train Depot and the French Lick Depot as well.

Can I bring an animal on board the train?

We do not allow animals on board the Spirit of Jasper Train, with the exception of service animals. Please notify an attendant if you have a service animal.

Can we bring food and drinks onto the train?

No, passengers may not bring their own food and drinks onto the train.  A cash bar and light snacks will be available for purchase on the train. Bar is cash only and credit cards will not be accepted on board the train.

Do we need to buy tickets prior to the date of departure?

With the exception of the Ride and Dine excursion, seats that have not been purchased in advance are sold at the Train Depot two hours prior to train departure.  However, in order to insure tickets for the excursion you desire, advance on-line purchase is recommended.

Do you allow children aboard the Spirit of Jasper Train?

Children are always welcome and must have a ticket. Caution is recommended to parents of infants and toddlers who might have a difficult time ‘relaxing’ for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Due to the general movement of the train or the rare potential for a sudden stop, children cannot walk about the cars unattended.  Due to safety issues, strollers and carriers are not permitted onboard.

Do you assign seats?

Seats will not be assigned, but will be available on a first-come first-served policy, unless an entire car has been chartered.  If a car has been chartered, then the attendants will notify passengers which cars are available for seating.

Does my child need a car seat to ride on the train?

No, regulations do not require the use of car seats.

How can I purchase gift certificates?

Gift certificates can be purchased online at www.spiritofjasper.com and over the phone by calling the Jasper Park and Recreation Department (812) 482-5959 or in person at the Jasper Park and Recreation Department at 1301 St. Charles Street, Jasper IN  47546 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Gift certificates can also be purchased the night of the event at the Jasper Train Depot box office.

How do we purchase tickets for the train?

There are three ways to purchase tickets and they are in order by preferred method.

  1. Purchase tickets online!
    • See calendar of events
    • Select event and pay by credit card
    • Print off ticket immediately at home on your own printer
    • Arriving at event, proceed into the depot with your electronic ticket and receive a boarding pass to enter the train. Beginning with the 2011 season, everyone must have a boarding pass before entering the train. 
  2. Over the phone by calling the Jasper Park and Recreation Department (812) 482-5959 or in person at the Jasper Park and Recreation Department at 1301 St. Charles Street, Jasper IN  47546 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
    • Pay by credit card or cash
    • Ticket and boarding pass will be available at depot ticket window the day of the event.
  3. IF AVAILABLE, purchase tickets at the train depot from two hours up to 5 minutes prior to departure on the day of the excursion, with the exception of Ride and Dine trips which tickets must be purchased at least 48 hours in advance.  We accept credit cards only. No personal checks are accepted.

How far in advance of the excursion can we board the train?

Trains begin boarding ½ hour prior to departure.

How long is the excursion?

The Jasper to French Lick Express excursion is 25 miles each way (50 miles roundtrip) and takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes on each leg. The Ride and Dine excursion is 9 miles each way (18 miles roundtrip) and takes approximately 45 minutes on each leg.

Is alcohol served on the train?

Excursions have a full bar option available. Alcohol consumption is allowed on all cars of the train. Alcohol can be purchased by cash only. Alcohol may only be purchased and consumed by persons 21 years of age or older. Note: Credit cards cannot be use on board the train for any purchases; bar is cash only.

Is smoking permitted on the train?

No, Smoking is not allowed on the train or inside of the depot. Smoking is permitted on the exterior areas of the depot and cigarette trash receptacles are available for safe disposal.

Is the Depot open even if the train is not scheduled to operate?

No, it is normally closed to the public due to the rental use of the Depot by individuals, businesses, and organizations. The Depot will be open prior to the scheduled train excursions and during special events.

Is the excursion steam or diesel powered?

All excursions are powered by diesel locomotives.

What amenities do the passenger cars have?

All cars are climate-controlled and have interior lighting. Restrooms are available on each car. Parlour Car #400 has (3) LCD flat-panel displays with DVD playback capability. Both the Parlour Car #400 and the Club Car #200 have an audio system for music with PA microphone capability.

What credit cards are accepted?

We accept Visa and MasterCard.

What hotel accommodations are available around or near the Jasper Train Depot?

What is the difference between the three train cars?

Club Car #200 is set up in a club seating configuration (Groups of 4 seats with table). The car has a seating capacity of 46 passengers (40 if dining).

Lounge Car #300 is set up in a dining car configuration with moveable chairs and tables. The lounge car has a seating capacity of 48 passengers (48 if dining).

Parlour Car #400 is set up in a modern contemporary seating configuration with leather couches and LCD flat-screen televisions with full size bar. The Parlour Car has a seating capacity of 26 passengers (0 if dining).

What time zone does the Jasper Train Depot and the "Spirit of Jasper" train observe?

The Train and Depot observe Eastern Time all year round. We do observe Daylight Savings Time so please check the excursion description pages prior to your trip if you are unsure of the current local time in Jasper (there is a clock at the top of the page depicting Jasper local time).
